Stockport Mug

Well it's been a busy few weeks but finally my latest project has come to fruition .
My Stockport painting has been telling me that it would lend itself to going on a mug,
So, that's been my plan, having some great help and support from Rick aka Mug man,
my plan was in action and I had a couple of samples made and have now taken delivery of a consignment of 'Stockport' mugs.
I have to say I am really pleased with the result and hope you will be too.
This is the Christmas Stocking filler you didn't realise you needed until now.
Interested ?
Priced at a reasonable £5.00 unboxed but nicely packaged, don't forget they are unique, and not available from any retailers.
If you want one posting out its going to cost you £8.00.

watercolour

Sorry folks still busy working on my latest painting, I've been so busy with one thing and another, its taking quite a while, in the mean time I promised to post some of my earlier work.
These watercolours were done in 1990, not so long ago only 23 years!
Where does the time go?  I've only dabbled a bit in watercolours since then, although I enjoyed using them, I realised that they are just not me, strangely enough, looking at some of my Mum's  watercolour work recently our styles are uncannily similar.

I was commissioned by a local hairdressers to come up with some paintings and have finally taken some pictures of them, the original picture's disappeared into the world of cyber space not long after I did them about 6 yrs ago. I was really influenced by the art deco /organic style, which is one of my favourite periods in the 20th century.
I came across the preliminary drawings for the lady recently, but had no record of the floral triptych, it has silver leaf and a highlight of purple on the honesty pods, I'm so pleased to have them in my photo collection.
I'm definately going to have to do something in this style again.

How amazing and inspirational is nature?
Taking a stroll through the woods I came across so many fabulous fungi
and just had to take some photos.

Wednesday, 30 October 2013

I have been doing a bit of organising in my new studio, and have come across lots of work, done years ago, long forgotten about, its been a proper nostalgic look back  This is a rough painting of a canvas I was commissioned to do for a hairdressing salon.
The finished piece was a triptych and was very successful.
I will share some more pics over the coming weeks while I work on my next painting.

Well its taken a while, but finally I have my own work space, I can make a mess, leave my stuff out and paint undisturbed.
Its been a very therapeutic few months, sorting / donating and chucking.
Trouble is when you come across stuff the kids made and old photos, you get side- tracked so the job takes so much longer because you are reminiscing, obviously they go in the keep me pile.
Now its time to put my room through its paces and get some more work done.

October is a busy month with lots of family and friends celebrating their birthdays.
This weekend I have been busy with some cakes for work colleagues.
What more could a bloke ask for ... beer and a massive burger.

I've been promising my son a new canvas for his room,  he's finally persuaded me to let him have his sisters big room while she's away at Uni, so a change of colour scheme and a furniture shift around it's ready for it's new artwork.
So far at 39"x 59" it the largest painting I've done, quite a challenge but loved it.
I remember the Stone Roses first time round, so feel pretty old now that my teenage son is a big fan.
I decided to log the process from my preliminary drawing and sketches to the transition onto canvas, with a few scenic changes along the way, I settled on the bridges and viaduct under Castlefield, in Manchester , the original photo as far as I am aware was taken in Japan.
He's delighted with it!

I've been having a little play, now I have finally got rid of my cold, its a good friends big birthday and she loves doing crafty stuff, so I have had a bash a doing a crafty cake as a surprise for her.

This is a little musical montage of my latest painting, I have been having a play and experimenting with movie stuff, excuse the quality of the pictures, they were done on my phone. This is only small 12 x 9 and is acrylic on board, which I haven't used before. The painting features my Dad and my uncles at a recent family wedding, I wouldn't usually paint the faces because in my other works faces are not relevant , they are just figures, but felt I had to have a go because they are people known to me. That was a challenge in itself and not one I particularly enjoyed.

I had a brief visit to Manchester Art gallery this week, they have an 'interesting' exhibition on called Do It!
An eclectic mix of things for you to do from active to the absurd and philosophical.
I treated myself to a book about Edward Hopper, whilst browsing in the shop, although I've been to busy to do any thing other than just flick through it at the moment.

Friday, 30 August 2013

Finally, The Stockport Express have put an article in the paper this week about the SKarts Exhibition at the Stockport art gallery, it finishes on Saturday !
This particular show has been running for a month, over the summer, the gallery was not listed in any of the places to visit during the school holidays, and considering the fragile state of keeping the gallery open, its quite amazing that it isn't promoted, this is our local gallery for local people it needs to be appreciated by the local council and not ignored .

This is my latest painting
The crowd at County
 18"x14" acrylic on canvas.
I had the idea of painting a crowd scene a while ago, I used to go and watch Stockport County many years ago, my friend lived on Hardcastle road, so it was no effort to nip in and watch a match .Over the years I have followed their ups and downs, and more recently my son has had the chance to play there and be ball boy as part of his football club, they have had Jim Gannon taking many of their training sessions.
Chatting to my dad about what I was painting, he came across some negatives taken in 1975 when George Best played for them , I have picked a couple of the advertising hordings from then, 'Greeneys cut price wallpapers' and 'Gordon Ford Stockport' which a few may remember. There was also an advert for Hollygate motor show on Chestergate and some heavy engineering specialist, as you can imagine it was quite difficult to pick out some of the words etc without having the benefit of a print and the fact it had been taken 30 odd years ago.

These are the two paintings in Stockport Art Gallery at the moment, only 1 week left if you have time for a visit, well worth it there are some fantastic works in there.

Friday, 23 August 2013

One of things that keep me busy is my love of cake decorating, this is my latest cake for my daughters birthday, she has just returned from a trip to Amsterdam, this was waiting for her when she got back.
I decorate them mainly for family and friends, and look forward to any special events when I can get the fondant out .I'm pretty pleased with my little Delft plaque on this one.

I had a brief visit to Leeds recently having never been before, I have to say I was pretty impressed with the shopping area.
I felt like a proper tourist taking pics of the old arcade, it was beautiful, the time and effort that was taken in the old days was incredible ,and creates the most amazing architecture that lasts, it was quite interesting to see how they united the old and new, ...not bad, give me the old any day.
I shall certainly go back and have a better look around .
The Cherry Bakewell Martini at the Alchemist was  a great way to finish the day.

Thursday, 8 August 2013

Well, I'm nearly finished, just a little something for the Stockport County fans out there.
